Idol Worship: Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater
January 25, 2013 § 1 Comment
A lot of people worship Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. It’s not just that they’re incredibly beautiful, but they were also style icons and movie stars. But as much as I love Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Some Like it Hot, I’ve never really understood the obsession. BUT HOW THE TABLES HAVE TURNED.
My family and I were big fans of Ugly Betty, and watched every episode until it got kicked off ABC in 2010 (I’m still bitter). It’s about the fictional high-fashion magazine MODE, where the Creative Director, Wilhelmina Slater (played by Vanessa Williams) presides over the glittery kingdom with 6 inch heels and relentless scheming. Her pure evil, in combination with her striking beauty and immaculate style, makes her..well, my idol. Really, I ADORE her.
Over the years, I’ve come to terms with the fact that I always look like A) a suburban mom B) a socialite or C) a mom (Edie has recently taken to calling me Mother Bear, referencing the Berenstain Bears books. (Just to put this in perspective: I’m 19). Don’t get me wrong: I don’t look like a frumpy, sleep deprived mom on the weekly carpool route. I would say…more like a younger mom with a cool job, semi-expensive clothes, and a nanny for the kids. While this may sound like I’m complimenting myself, keep in mind that this is adding at least 15 years to my current age. The bottom line: I’ve given up on looking my age. But thank god for Wilhelmina Slater and her perfectly tailored sheath dresses and matte lipstick- I’ve never felt so inspired to look like a 40 year old.
Here’s a link to the purple stole I just bought: Nordstrom . They styled it terribly, but trust me, it’s awesome.
Note that because all these pictures are screen shots from the show, she looks like a total bitch. Vanessa Williams herself is actually capable of smiling, just to clarify. The show ran from 2006-2010, and while some of the outfits from the earlier seasons look a bit dated, I find them all right on the mark.
Tonight Edie and I are going to Project Pop Up: Night Market III, an art event in downtown Pittsburgh. It’s snowing, and it will likely be 20degrees, but I’ll be sure to pull out the purple fur to pay my respects to Ms. Slater.
Go Forth & CONQUER ALL.
